The Convoluted Story of Crypto and Coronavirus (Article; Not a piece of investment advice; Not meant to spread FUD)

The Convoluted Story of Crypto and Coronavirus

The recent Coronavirus outbreak in China has brought businesses to a standstill. It cost hundreds of lives and sent shockwaves to the entire world. On the other hand, the cryptocurrency market witnessed huge gains in early February and took a nose-dive in the last week. These series of events does bug everybody if the epidemic is impacting crypto. In this short post, ChangeHero will reveal what is happening to crypto amid this epidemic.
https://preview.redd.it/goqdtfslk9k41.jpg?width=1901&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dd48e4f3629ec813f1cd3e2d5700470ab1e329e4
The Outbreak
According to the World Health Organization Coronovirus disease (COVID-19), was first reported in Wuhan, China on 31 December 2019. A Bloomberg report suggests that there are 82,302 confirmed cases and 2,802 deaths worldwide, but China has been the most affected. In measures to contain the spread, the Chinese government has locked down cities and restricted the free movement of people which made the factories and businesses to shut the doors. The steep in the factory output has taken a toll on the Chinese economy and also threatened the global economy. Industries such as manufacturing, oil and gas, tourism and supply chain suffered the most. In the same vein, crypto is also not immune to this virus.
Miners hammered
China has a history of crackdowns on cryptocurrencies and exchanges. On the contrary, they are spearheading the blockchain adoption race and working towards digital currency, quickly go through this article for more info about China and cryptocurrencies. Moreover, the top five mining companies — AntPool, BTC.com, BTC.top, F2 Pool and ViaBTC are based in China. These firms control almost 60% of the hash power in the Bitcoin network. Mining farms are the first to be affected by the outbreak and a few representatives of these firms expressed their concerns on Social Media. Many stated that the government has cut off the electricity, supplies and also drove away workers from mining facilities. It reflected in the difficulty of bitcoin mining, a measure which indicates the effort required to solve the math in finding the block. This measure is adjusted once every two weeks and in the last difficulty correction, the measure rose only by 0.52% which is significantly lesser than the previous corrections of 4.67 and 7.08.
Mining may soon turn out to be a not so profitable activity, credits to the Bitcoin Halving. Bitcoin will undergo its third halving event somewhere around May and the block reward will be slashed to 6.25 BTC. It leads to tougher and unfavourable economic conditions. To boost their chances of surviving, miners are gearing up with advanced machines. Yet again, China is one of the largest suppliers of the mining equipment. Coronavirus outbreak has also locked up the doors of the factories and the companies have postponed the deliveries. Although there is a significant impact on the crypto mining industry in China, Bitcoin hash rate has seen a negligible change.
Community reflex
To restrain the spread of the virus, the Chinese government has halted the distribution of Yuan worth almost a Billion Dollars. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 Index and other traditional markets have also recorded their worst performances due to the epidemic. Crypto community was quick to react and hinted that digital currency can fix this. Big names in the crypto sphere like Binance and Tron have also pledged support to the coronavirus victims. Moreover, the epidemic has spread a sense of terror amongst the community and led to the cancellation and postponing of the conferences and public events.
Amidst the crisis, CoronaCoin, an ERC-20 token was launched with the ticker NCOV. Though the website states that the token is meant for charity, it’s approach has shocked the crypto community. The cryptocurrency has a total supply equal to the world’s population and the tokens will be burnt every 48 hours, proportionate to the number of casualties. The concept of investors benefitting with the spread of the virus poses serious moral questions on this project.
Impact on the crypto
Bitcoin kickstarted the new decade with a massive bull run and crossed the ten thousand dollar mark in early February. Many have contributed this to the upcoming halving and some connected it to the coronavirus outbreak. Things didn’t fare well long for crypto and the whole market crashed and lost a whopping 50 Billion Dollars in the last week of February. The epidemic has indeed affected the people and processes behind the crypto industry but it is still unclear if there is a correlation between the coronavirus and the crypto market prices. Nevertheless, the notion of Bitcoin as a safe haven during the crisis still exists but hasn’t been proven yet, at least for now. We hope the crisis will end soon and peace be restored. Until then, all our strength to the effected, families and businesses around.

Mining news

  • The former head of Venezuela’s Bolivarian National Intelligence Service has alleged that Venezuela is secretly mining cryptocurrency on a massive scale – to the extent that citizens are now experiencing frequent blackouts and power shortages. Per a report from media outlet Konzapata, Simón Zerpa, the former head of the intelligence agency, known locally as Sebin, the country has imported a number of USD 5,000 rigs from China under the guise of creating infrastructure for its own Petro token. In another article from the same media outlet, Zerpa also claims the crypto exchanges that accept Petro trading in Venezuela are all directly controlled by prominent figures within the government.

Trading news

  • Binance has announced that it has opened Nigerian fiat naira-to-crypto trading. Per an official announcement, the company stated that it was now offering naira pairings with Bitcoin, as well as its own new American dollar-pegged BUSD stablecoin and the Binance Coin (BNB). • Cryptocurrency exchange Bittrex says that the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) has requested that Bittrex postpone the New York account closure deadline until further notice. Therefore, New York residents will be able to continue to withdraw funds, but may not deposit or trade on this platform. All trading for New York customers was halted in April 2019 and all account access was disabled in June by direction of the NYFDS.

Legal news

  • An American man is attempting to sue carrier AT&T, reports ABC. The man claims that AT&T staff allowed a hacker to access his mobile phone number, leading to the theft of over USD 1.8 million worth of cryptocurrencies from accounts at a number of cryptocurrency exchanges. The man says he was the victim of a SIM swap sting which has deprived him of his “entire life savings.”
  • Police in Poland arrested president of Crypto Capital, aka Global Trade Solutions AG, Ivan Manuel Molina Lee, on accusations of money laundering as a member of the international drug cartel. According to W Polityce, he is wanted in Poland for laundering up to 1.5 billion zloty (c. USD 390 million) and laundering money for Columbian drug cartels through a cryptocurrency exchange. Meanwhile, Crypto Capital is accused by Bitfinex of losing USD 880 million of fund the exchange entrusted it with. As reported this week, the parent company of Bitfinex, iFinex Inc., has filed an application for discovery in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of Southern California on October 18, 2019. iFinex claims that the discovery concerns its attempts to recover the aforementioned USD 880 million which the company allegedly wasn't able to access from December 2018 at least.

Regulation news

  • The Deputy Chair of Russia’s upper house Constitutional Legislation Committee says there is an “urgent need” for the country to introduce blockchain- and cryptocurrency-related legislation. Per the country’s Parliamentary Gazette, the committee’s Lyudmila Bokova says the government’s regulatory framework cannot keep up with the pace of innovation.

Adoption news

  • Russia’s Central Bank says it is considering using blockchain technology to power a system of cross-border remissions that it wants to have active by 2023, per RBC. The bank wants to speed up its digitization process, but its governor and deputy governors remain bitterly opposed to cryptocurrency usage – favoring a total, China-style crackdown.
  • Japan’s Softbank, IBM Japan and TBCASoft (of the USA) have all joined forces to create a blockchain solution for mobile carriers using inter-carrier blockchain technology. Per Fisco, via Gentoshoa, the parties want to work on a new solution that would allow Japanese phone owners to use their mobile-based payment applications at stores overseas, and enable inter-carrier transactions.
  • Though adoption is far from widespread, a rising number of Americans own crypto, according to a survey of 2,068 participants commissioned by Finder, an independent comparison platform and information service. In the last year, the survey says, the number of respondents who own a cryptocurrency has almost doubled from 7.95% in 2018 to 14.4% in 2019, which is an increase of 81% in one year. The average total in crypto that each is holding is USD 5,447, while the median amount of crypto in American digital wallets is just USD 360, claims the survey.
  • ConsenSys Space, a subsidiary of blockchain company ConsenSys, has announced the launch of a new satellite tracker based on Ethereum’s network - a project called TruSat. China Continues To Tighten The Rope On Chinese Crypto Entrepreneurs

China Continues To Tighten The Rope On Chinese Crypto Entrepreneurs

Despite The Calls For Blockchain Adoption, Chinese Regulators Are Pushing Crypto-Related Businesses Into Shutdown
Chinese regulators are "cleaning up" the domestic crypto market, as at least five local exchange platforms halted operations until further notice. Regulators issued several notices and warnings regarding crypto trading.
The news comes despite China's President Xi Jinping's assurance his government would boost the development of blockchain technology.
One of the leading social media platforms in China, Weibo, already shut down all accounts linked to Binance and TRON.
The actions from last week are the biggest crackdown on crypto regulations since the ICO ban in 2017. And while fiat-to-crypto exchanges are still officially banned, the over-the-counter (OTC) sector is thriving, and people are reverting to crypto-to-crypto actions, with Tether as a gateway for entering the crypto world.
The pressure also would affect Bitcoin's shaky price from last week. The world's #1 crypto tumbled with almost $1,000 in price in a matter of a week, despite its 6% rebound from Wednesday. The crackdown could lead to massive investor insecurity in the Asia-Pacific market, which accounts for over 40% of the total bitcoin transactions in the first half of 2019.
Two more Chinese crypto-related exchange operators stated they shut down operations - the Bitsoda and Akdex trading platforms. And while Chinese crypto companies are slowly fleeing the regulatory havoc, users are more interested in protecting the crypto assets they possess. Crypto holders are transferring their exchange-based crypto assets into both hardware and software wallets. One of the largest Chinese wallet apps, ImToken, reported a rapid increase in their Tether transactions. People use Tether as a haven for cryptocurrency value, as Tether is tied to a fiat currency like the U.S. Dollar.
One of the most influential names in Asia's crypto space - TRON's founder Justin Sun, brightened up the situation by stating that despite the regulatory crackdown, the current market state in China is still very positive. "If we look at the situation in the short-term, however, we expected much more progress than now," Sun added.

Shanghai Issues Notice To Launch A ‘Crackdown’ On Virtual Currency ActivityAccording to the report of 10jqka, China’s Internet Financial Risk Special Rectification Work Leadership Team Office and Shanghai Financial Services Office jointly issued a notice on Nov 14, saying that they will investigate and crackdown on virtual currency-related activities, which will be finished before November 22. This news has now been confirmed by ThePaper.cn, an online media start-up backed by the Shanghai United Media Group. The promotion of blockchain in China inevitably “gives virtual currencies-related illegal activities a leg up” after President XI Jinping personally endorsed the promising technology. According to the notice, the move is to prevent the speculation on virtual currencies which has seen a rising momentum relying on the recent promotion of blockchain technology. It focuses on three unlawful activities: organizing virtual currency transactions in China; issuing virtual currencies under the guise of application scenarios for blockchain; providing publicity, agent trading and other services for ICO projects and virtual currency trading platforms registered abroad. The notice made it clear that the Internet enterprises will be immediately reported to the Internet Financial Risk Special Rectification Work Leadership Team Office and the People’s Bank of China, headquartered in Shanghai, once they involve in those activities mentioned above. As earlier reported by CoinNess, the Weibo account of TRON and Binance has been blocked. It seems that China is further imposing controls on cryptocurrencies.

YouTuber Claims That Bakkt Is Wall Street’s Attack On BitcoinIn a recently-posted YouTuber video titled “Bakkt is BAD for BITCOIN! Exposing the Wall St. Attack,” the YouTuber highlights several peculiarities about the ICE-backed futures exchange and custody solution. The most notable of these relate to the actual process of taking delivery of the “physical” Bitcoin from the “physically-settled” Bitcoin futures contracts.

After trading to a new monthly low at $8,457, bitcoin started an upside correction against the US Dollar. BTC climbed above the $8,550 and $8,600 resistance levels to start the current correction.
Moreover, there was a break above the 50% Fib retracement level of the recent decline from the $8,785 high to $8,457 low. Finally, there was a spike above the $8,650 resistance area.
However, the upward move was capped by the $8,700 resistance the 100 hourly simple moving average. More importantly, morning’s major declining channel is preventing gains near $8,705 on the hourly chart of the BTC/USD pair.
Besides, it seems like the 76.4% Fib retracement level of the recent decline from the $8,785 high to $8,457 low is also acting as a strong resistance.

spec shitshow #4

In my first shitshow post i told you guys about the paradigm shift. Then i talked about the importance of nonprofits in said shift and that no privately owned company will play an important role in it. I then digged out some possible third VC that IOTA has, in response to shit being talked online about IOTA.
Then verge pumped because of a Tweet that you need to donate for a partnership...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1U1PM-p3860

Verge is a 1B Cryptocurrency while IOTA is about 2B.. it does make you wonder how that can be. Now before we start to dig into things let me make it clear that i have no formal education on finance or economics. If you do, you probably should skip this one. Also, if you invest based on this Thread, it is only fair that you lose all your money because you are a dumbass.

It's almost impossible to value cryptos. "There is no Fundamentals" - is what a legacy market guy would tell you. As we learned in one of my other posts, the IF itself doesn't even need to issue public financial statements (which in my opinion it should do).
What we can do however compare different ledgers and or research projects against each other. So let's go back to Verge. Verge is a Shitcoin. IOTA is not. If you agree with that you come to the following conclusion: Either the altcoin market will still have to fall about 95% in value to follow common sense or IOTA is highly undervalued. Or maybe IOTA is a bit overvalued and others have to fall more or.... you get my point.

First things first: Bitcoin is here to stay. It is not an altcoin and it won't be one for a long time. Bitcoin can exist as a store of value alone - it does not need the "buying coffee" use case bitcoin maximalists can't shut up about.
https://twitter.com/MacroScope17/status/961622167048859648

If you are using Bitcoin to provide a negative before telling people why IOTA can do everything better you are lost in the woods. I know this is a very popular narrative among IOTA aficionados and this might be hard for you to hear.
Yes, having a DAG without mining is wonderful - but using energy to secure a public ledger is not the dumbest thing in the world. As of now, IOTA is nowhere near being called immutable. This will take time.
If you are relatively new to cryptos in general, most likely joined last year or during this years peak - do not fall into that line of thinking. That for IOTA to grow, Bitcoin needs to vanish. Try to think for yourself. And read the following Article:
https://medium.com/@vijayboyapati/the-bullish-case-for-bitcoin-6ecc8bdecc1

SHUT UP ABOUT BITCOIN. Okey, jesus. I'm sorry. I needed to make this point so i can talk shit about "Blockchain" and how it all ties together.
As a non-developer, after a while, "Blockchain" is probably the most boring, stagnant tech i can think of. It's almost as boring as Smartphones only getting a tiny bit bigger and shatter more easily when you drop them. Imho, "Bitcoin" is the only interesting thing about "Blockchain".
Today, "Blockchain" is so irrelevant that in 2018 Vitalik Buterin still publishes Text on centralized servers which are, big surprise, NOT censorship resistant
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medium_(website) https://medium.com/@VitalikButerin
"As of June 2017, Medium has been blocked in Egypt along with more than 60 online media websites in a crackdown by the Egyptian government."

Amazing.

Friendly reminder ETH was supposed to be THE web 3.0. Most people seem to ignore that or they never figured because of what they are presented with. Sure there is a roadmap, sharding this and that, but if i'm getting excited about future theoretical improvements on a protocol, im excited about IOTA. Simple.

With this in mind: The EU is at it again!
https://ec.europa.eu/digital-single-market/en/news/european-countries-join-blockchain-partnership
"In the future, all public services will use blockchain technology. Blockchain is a great opportunity for Europe and Member States to rethink their information systems, to promote user trust and the protection of personal data, to help create new business opportunities and to establish new areas of leadership, benefiting citizens, public services and companies. The Partnership launched today enables Member States to work together with the European Commission to turn the enormous potential of blockchain technology into better services for citizens".

This circlejerk from politicians is about 4 years too late. One can only hope that by "Blockchain" they simply use it as the buzzword it has degenerated into.
It is however nice to see the EU is starting to befriend distributed ledgers, they even fund privacy research on the chain: It will use blockchain technology to create tools that will give people ownership of the data which they and the devices they own generate, in order to respond to concerns about losing control of personal information on the internet.
they go on and say that:
Currently, four pilot projects are being developed in Amsterdam and Barcelona, focused on the themes of the Internet of Things, open democracy and the sharing economy.

Ok so.. Blockchain and IoT? Sure bro.
https://ec.europa.eu/digital-single-market/en/news/blockchain-give-people-more-control-about-their-data

Lets go one step back. How much money does the EU spend on research for this in total and how does it compare to the IOTA Foundation?
22 European countries plan to have allocated a total of 380M Euro by the end of 2020.
Let's compare this to the IF. Get ready for some quick maffs.
the IF received 5% of the total supply as donations. In addition to that the Ecosystem fund holds another 21T (correct?!). At the current price, ignoring VC hoarding, ignoring lawyers, salaries etc. the IF is worth about 220M Dollar .
Ya know. Plus minus tens of millions.
In my very humble opinion: those countries probably are well advised to get in contact with the IF (if they aren't already).

So. What if the price of 1 Miota drops to 50Cents? The Ecosystem Fund would still value 10M to support innovation around the tangle. This holds up very well versus the 2 years 5M program the EU has going, building tools for privacy on top of Blockchain.
It should peak everyone's interest how this plays out. And how much the IF is involved here.
So.. is a 2B Market Cap still absurd for IOTA? I really hope it is NOT. Because the current MC gives the IF the possibility to rival the research incentives of 22 European countries.

Why did i go on about Bitcoin in the beginning. You see: as long as IOTA is traded against Bitcoin, you have two different $ prices attached to it. If 1 Miota is worth 17k satoshi, the price of satoshis dictates the price of Iota. One often ignored fact is that Binance overtook Finex in volume the past few weeks (ignoring the fact here that most volume on Binance is fake). But still, in a market where (as of today) Bitcoin has 44% Market Share and IOTA a measly 1%, it is naive to think any kind of "decoupling" will happen anytime soon unless these numbers change. The best MIOTA can do is to outperform Bitcoin with a steady uptrend. This would be best case scenario.
https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/iota/#markets
The available funds of the IF, especially the Ecofund, is in direct correlation to the bitcoin price - if you like it or not. So lets be careful what we wish for.

Daily Performances
The crypto market has seen a temporary recovery. Most cryptocurrencies are consolidating the losses. This a positive reaction to the wave of unexpected selloff on Monday. Ethereum is up more than 9% on the day and find a minor support at USD200. XRP, ADA are notable gainers while IOTA is still suffering from selling pressure with a 0.73% drop.

Technical Analysis - BTCBTCUSD has seen minor jump after the wake of the declines that took place yesterday and found some support at the previous resistance level of 6,250. We expect some consolidation in this area for the next days. Breaking below this level would be negative for the overall chart structure. On the other hand, if BTCUSD manages to turn upwards and break above the previous high of 7,450 it would be a strong sign of being in a new strong up trend and potentially a new bull market.

Daily Performances
While there was no immediate catalyst for the sudden reversal, a bearish sentiment continues to drive market trends, with total market cap approaching USD200 billion. Yesterday, the market was pushed lower on what appears to be a large seller in ETH, driving the price down to almost USD180. Bitcoin also pulled back sharply after failing to maintain its upside movement. The next few days will be a test to see if the market will recover or not.

Technical Analysis - BTC
The 100MA is below the longer-term 200MA to signal that the path of least resistance is to the downside. This means that the support is more likely to break than to hold. The big number everyone should be looking at is the 6,000 level on BTCUSD. It seems it is still holding for now. A move below it could lead to another waterfall towards 4-5k, while a recovery above USD7,450 would most likely indicate an end to this bear market. May we live in interesting times.

Daily Performances
General Comment: The market saw a rebound from the lows after SEC ruled that Ether was not a security and CBOE opened the door for Ether futures. However, it was not a strong enough rally with momentum or volume to escape the downtrend. Emerging markets have reacted sharply to Mario Draghi but there appears to be no spillover into crypto. A tight BTC range of 6000-7000 is expected for the short term.

Technical Analysis - BTC
BTC/USD is changing hands at USD6'589, off late Thursday high reached at USD6'620. The recovery is fading away, signalling that the market may resume the downside as positive news have a very short-term effect. Once the resistance of USD6'600 is cleared, the upside may be extended towards USD6'700 and then to the ultimate bullish goal at USD7,000. On the downside, a sustainable movement below USD6'500 will throw us back to USD6'400.

As Bitcoin Futures Volumes Increase Credit Agencies Look to Downgrade Dealers While BTC-spot prices slide to significant lows, both futures products from these Cboe and CME Group are still seeing increased demand for contracts.
Daily Performances
General Comment: The market continues to slide lower, with $6'000 being the next critical level to test. $6'800-7'000 resistance to the upside needs to be broken to alleviate recent downward pressure. There is a slight pick up in realised volatility, but at-the-money option implied volatility have moved even lower with the wings (lower and higher strikes) at higher implied volatilities on a relative basis. This indicates that at current levels in BTC the market is expected to be calm and order, while there is much higher chance of acceleration if the market moves out of the range. Short term volume spikes and gap movement will most likely continue..

Technical Analysis - BTC
The bitcoin price has demonstrated a short-term corrective rally from $6'100, rebounding to $6'500 over the past 24 hours, rising by 3%. However, the downward trend of BTC is still overpowering and it is likely that today’s rebound is only a short-term corrective rally before another bleed out to the $5'000 region. We still see the price of BTC dropping to the lower end of $5'000 before initiating yet another bull run in the mid-term.

CBDC Could Have “Severely Negative Consequences” for “Bank-Dominated Payments System” – Former FDIC Chair The development of a state-issued cryptocurrency could reduce the risk of financial crises and improve monetary policy tools.
Daily Performances
General Comment: A third wave of selling hit the market pushing BTC to the 6'500 level. Over the last few days each wave has managed to push BTC 3-6% lower in a matter of a couple hours. In very light volumes this type of systematic selling can have large impacts on the market especially when breaching critical support levels. Total market cap has dipped below USD300 billion. With very little market interest or participation from large players the market will probably continue to be hostage to technical levels and gap moves. A lack of strong signals urges caution.
https://preview.redd.it/wi5ekd5y3r311.png?width=875&format=png&auto=webp&s=0d39c259f4dec6b88760e7eccee08c5f2ea308d8
Technical Analysis - BTC
BTCUSD has broken the triangle on the downside on heavy volume. We expect BTCUSD to continue falling until at least $5,000-$5,500 in the coming weeks. A movement above 7,300 for BTCUSD would invalidate this expectation.

Crypto Giant Binance to Offer Euro Trading Pairs This YearBinance will allow customers to convert digital tokens into fiat currencies such as the euro, according to Chief Executive Officer Zhao Changpeng.
Daily Performances
General Comment: After breaching the USD7'000 level for BTC and a gap down, calm appears to have returned to the crypto market. Large market players continue to be on the sidelines, and directionless trading may return for a while despite negative technicals. Option implied vols remain subdued despite a small spike in short term vol, and indicate that there is no discernable panic priced in. Volumes continue to be light. It is possible that for the short term BTC attempts to consolidate in a new lower range.
https://preview.redd.it/jy5ah5yl3r311.png?width=738&format=png&auto=webp&s=90ad8e67c47a0686eea158209d6675ee47c47fe7
Technical Analysis - BTC
BTCUSD has broken the triangle on the downside on heavy volume. The past few hours were very bearish as bitcoin price declined by more than $500 against the US Dollar and fell below a major support area at $7'000 against the US Dollar. As long as the price is below the stated level, it remains at a risk of a downside break below the $6,600 level in the near term. Therefore, if the price corrects higher, it could face sellers near the $6,900 and $7,000 levels.

Crypto Manga - Comic Book Series to Spread Cryptocurrency Awareness - Bitcoin NewsThe first issue of a crypto comic book series called Shonen Crypto has been released.
Daily Performances
General Comment: BTC breached the psychological USD7'000 support level and technical lower band of recent ranges. Thin trading on Sunday is a probably an appropriate time to launch an attack on key levels to trigger stops, and pull participants into the market. The closest support level was the obvious easy target. Having said that, there appears to be no apparent news and only a small increase in volumes. The next few days will be a test to see if markets can regain ground, or head lower to sub-6'000 ranges.
https://preview.redd.it/pbpddkpslc311.png?width=894&format=png&auto=webp&s=28e6f8c1ac834ef98c44d84ad566c8e1f6605d74
Technical Analysis - BTC
BTCUSD has broken the triangle on the downside on heavy volume. There is some newsflow around a crackdown on exchanges for not complying with a BTC manipulation probe and a hack at Coinrail (a small Korean exchange) about USD40mm of altcoins. We do not believe these to be the reasons behind the fall. We believe the reason is technical and this makes the signal stronger than if it were driven by news. We expect BTCUSD to continue falling until at least $5'000-$5'500 in the coming weeks. A movement above 7'300 for BTCUSD would invalidate this expectation.

[uncensored-r/CryptoCurrency] Predictions for 2018 and lessons learned from trends in 2017

The following post by arsonbunny is being replicated because some comments within the post(but not the post itself) have been openly removed.
The original post can be found(in censored form) at this link:
np.reddit.com/ CryptoCurrency/comments/7qk781
The original post's content was as follows:
I'd like to take the time to reflect on the crazy year that was 2017 for cryptocurrency investors, and weigh in on what we've learned over the past year, while also making a few predictions for the future.
One year feels like a decade in crypto, and so many various forces finally cumulated together in 2017 that we had an explosion of activity that left me feeling both exhausted and exhilarated. We saw LTC go on Coinbase, we saw an ICO rush with new issues like Bancor raising 150mil in 3 hours, we saw the absurdity that is cryptokitties crushing the ETH network, we saw Bitcoin Cash and the shitshow surrounding that, we saw Segwit and the long awaited Bitcoin futures. I will always remember where I was at the moment I watched Bitcoin pass $10,000 on GDAX. I will never forget the sweat as I watched the Gemini Auction for my BTC and then waiting for the payment to settle. And I will never forget the flurry of questions, advice seeking and inquiries from people in December as the media spotlight made cryptocurrencies a mainstream concern. We've come a long way, from the days of being considered oddball technogeeks to now being the vanguard of early adopters.

Some major trends in 2017 and lessons learned

  • The Mainstreaming of Cryptocurrencies: This was the year that the "normies" entered crypto in astounding numbers, especially later in the year and cumulating in December. From Ice Tea companies to my hairdresser, everyone wanted to be involved in crypto. New naive money will continue to pump into the market this year, and its important we welcome them while also keeping their expectations grounded in reality. Encouraging new investors with stories of how they can double their investment in a week is not a sustainable method of keeping them interested in crypto.
  • ICO Craze: For many 2017 was the year that the ICO. People made a ton of money by getting into ICOs early before a coin became hyped by the marketing efforts. Sites like ICOBench sprung up and provided people an easy way to find new ICOs to invest in, and those who got in could get a handsome profit by buying the coins for pennies then selling them for dimes a few months later at an exchange, with many ICOs offering pre-sale discounts for early registrations. I suspect that this trend will actually die out in 2018 as there seem to be way too many coins coming out now and they won't all be able to pump, we're already seeing ICOs recently getting dumped hard the moment they start trading on an exchange.
  • The rapid development of altcoin investment: At the beginning of the year the marketcap for altcoins as just $2 billion. By the end of 2017 it grew to over $370 billion. This was the year that investing in cryptos became about more than just Bitcoin. We saw an explosion of new promising altcoins, Binance launched in July, LTC was added to Coinbase and Ethereum really came into its own as a dominant force. I suspect that this focus on altcoins will continue as its now easier than ever to research and obtain them.
  • Resilience in the face of regulation: China banned initial coin offerings and bitcoin exchanges in the first weeks of September. The ban caused a precipitous drop in cryptocurrency flows worldwide and invoked panic within me, with Bitcoin going down to almost $3K. However we recovered surprisingly quick. This is why I wasn't too concerned with the recent news that Korea may crack down on exchanges. Cryptocurrencies are decentralized and distributed, and while government actions certainly can hurt the price in the short term, I think any attempts at increased crackdowns will result in a recovery within a few months. Crypto seems to be a lot more resilient than most people realize to laws trying to destroy it, so don't freak out when you hear a story about increased regulation in the Far East.
  • Institutional money coming in: We saw the speculation of an ETF not come to fruition, but in December the CME Group and CBOE started trading futures on Bitcoin. The lead up to this event and the subsequent decline and relative stabilization of Bitcoin will lead to a cascade of effects. We now have a genuine price discovery mechanism that will put downward pressure on BTC with its futures contracts. McAfees predictions of a million dollar BTC are not going to come to fruition now that you can short it.
  • Chase for the "next bitcoin": Lambo psychosis dominated and continued into the new year with nearly every coin in the top 100 showing a steep parabolic rise. This is actually something a lot of long term investors find deeply troubling, because now people are hungry for crazy x10 gains within a month and that is simply unsustainable.

Some predictions for the year 2018

Decline for Bitcoin
I have a long-standing emotional connection to Bitcoin and really do want it to succeed. But by now even the early adopters have come to accept how far away we are from the original vision of the currency. We are now seeing a decrease in adoption among ecommerce sites, which a sad state of affairs. I'm not so confident that Lighning will be enough at this point. Lightning likely wont be here for at least another 1-2 years and the problem will be user adoption. Segwit gave users a 40% discount on fees, and was a relatively simple upgrade, yet its 2018 and only 8% of transactions come from Segwit addresses. LN is way more difficult to implement, so don't expect it to be useful for at least a year after release. Core developers should have followed through with the New York Agreement and increased the blocksize to 2 MB. It's actually much more practical to scale BTC through miners than users, as most miners abide by the rules of a small set of mining pools and use the same software. Segwit2X was doomed to failure but it had 90% support among miners before the campaign against it started, and even after it had over 70% miner support. I think 70% miner support before a fork is vastly better for initiating a change than 8% user support.
Core team really needs to wake up right away and realize that the continual declines in market dominance are a reflection of Bitcoins failure to find utility, and that the first movers advantage and name brand will not last forever. Unless it solves the problem of insane transaction fees, ballooned mempool size, long transaction times and most of the accounts not even being able to afford to move the balance out I don't see BTC doing anything but declining in market dominance.
Ethereum will become an even more dominant force
I can see the long awaited flipening come in 2018. Ethereum already processes way more transactions than anything else, it already is basically THE platform for new coins and powers so much of the entire cryptocurrency ecosystem. The Constantinople fork and Casper Proof-of-Stake changes should take care of the TPS limitations for the next few years, and I expect to see an explosion of dApps in 2018. Ethereum has tons of developer support behind it and POS means people will want to hold it for the long term. Its already become my #1 core/safe-haven position and I think a 3-5K range in 2018 is completely reasonable.
The emergence of transactable business-oriented blockchains
The last few years were about theory and technological innovation, but I think 2018 will be the year that cryptocurrencies finally start to demonstrate value in solving business problems.
Ultimately a cryptocurrency is pointless if it doesn't solve some transactional problem or alleviate some inefficiency in the value-exchange process. There are several sectors/cases for business users that are ripe for blockchain technology: supply chain, settlement layers between intercurrency transactions, payment processing, offloading processing tasks onto blockchains, identity management...etc.
I expect that transactable coins that actually have functionality will be the big winners. ICX, WTC, VEN, NEO, XLM and others that target enterprise-oriented use cases will likely be the focus over the next year.
The rise of a DAG coin as a standard for transfers between exchanges, most likely Raiblocks (XRB)
Lets be perfectly honest: Right now the vast majority of transactions being conducted on the blockchain is simply moving cryptos around various exchanges. Its quite a nerve-wracking process, watching thousands of dollars sitting unconfirmed on the blockchain explorer for hours is not a pleasant experience. If you move your balances a lot you will end up losing substantial money to transfer fees. This is why I can see a light fast DAG becoming a standard for inter-exchange transfers of funds, specifically XRB after it gets listed on Binance. Being a DAG the process of onboarding isn't as simple as just adding another ERC20 coin, but once the Raiblocks team figures this out on Binance I suspect that adoption will follow quickly to other exchanges. The quick transactions speed and no cost will make it the ideal coin to exploit arbitrage between less liquid and more liquid markets.
The rise of "dividend" coins"
The next year should be one where the stretched valuations are questioned, and those coins that pay out a form of dividend and can thus be easily valued will become a safe harbor. NEO, EOS, ARK, VEN,OMG among others should gain favor. We actually saw NEO do particularly well in this recent downturn. I expect to see a lot more also following this dividend payment model.
**The move away ...

Daily Performances
General Comments: There have been a mix bag of news coming out over the last 24 hours. In general there have been both positive and negative news but for choice the market seems concerned more about the negatives (eg. some exchanges giving in to Japanese regulator pressure). BTC broke below USD6'000 again in extremely light volumes (USD11 billion according to Coinmarketcap in the last 24H). More time will be needed to escape the doldrums and turn the tides.

Technical Analysis - BTC Bitcoin price nursing nominal losses on Friday, heading for a second straight month of declines at around 20%. BTC/USD has been producing lower highs and lower lows, which point to a potential larger move to the downside. The key near-term support is eyed at the 24th June low, around USD5'759

Daily Performances
General Comments: Most of the top ten coins are seeing a mild recovery. EOS and IOTA have seen the largest gains, respectively trading up 6.08 and 4.34% over the 24h. Total market cap is around USD247 billion, up almost 6% from this week’s low on June 24 of USD235 billion. However, the reverse ban on crypto advertisement by Facebook had no impact on the cryptocurrency markets in any way in the short-term. Unless the volume of major digital assets spike up in the next 24 to 48 hours, it is unlikely that the market initiates a large corrective rally and loses more value in the short-term.

Technical Analysis - BTC
BTCUSD price dropped to 6000 to reflect the return in selling pressure and a stronger downside momentum. The price recovered from early losses reached at USD6'006, but still in the red zone on daily basis. The local support is created by USD16'137, followed by USD6'194. On the downside, USD6'000 serves as a critical support, followed by Sunday's low at USD5'777.
Daily Performances
General Comments: Most coins are in red again as the recovery momentum proved to be too weak to take prices above critical resistance levels. While no one knows for sure when this bear market hit the bottom, ceteris paribus, we will continue hitting new lows for the foreseeable future. Bitcoin is changing hands at USD6'080, down 2.4% on daily basis.

General Comments: As Bitcoin bounced back after crashing below USD6,000 at the end of the previous week, some crypto bulls come out with optimistic views. Crypto bulls struggle to calm down speculative panic on the market by reminding traders and investors that Bitcoin has a history of deep corrections and even downside trends, but in the longer-term perspective it is still a viable investment and revolutionary concept.

Daily Performances
With BTC traversing below the psychological USD6'000 level and temporarily breaching USD5'800, this consummates the USD5'000 to USD20'000 round trip since the rally starting November of 2017. The market has since recovered above 6'000 but the recent price action can be described as a slow motion bleed out in thin volumes and a lack of large participation. There have been a multitude of news catalysts, mostly negative, that could have caused this such as continued exchange hacks, regulatory tightening, and most recently negative price action from the much hyped EOS. As can be seen from extremely low option implied vols, none of the recent moves indicate any level of panic. As we approach summer it is possible we see a prolonged period of doldrums, but external geopolitical and economic factors could be a catalyst for a turn in the market.

Technical Analysis - BTC
We saw a big reversal on Sunday, a lot of it seemed to be fuelled via short covering on BitMEX, where we saw sizeable short liquidations and a marked decrease in open interest on the swap. At the moment the movement remains a short term bounce and we remain in a downtrend on the daily chart, a close above 6'800 would change our bearish view and turn it into bullish.

Nothing much has changed in the broad crypto landscape. BTC has remained comfortably above 20DMA despite the $6,000 level magnet, and also has been resilient to negative news. Light volumes still indicate a lack of conviction but $6,800-$7,000 range to the upside seems to be the short term target necessary for another leg higher. 10-07 14:13 - 'What sets apart a good exchange from a scammy one?' (self.Bitcoin) by /u/badalray removed from /r/Bitcoin within 319-329min

'''
Just like all commodities, we need good platforms to trade our crypto assets like Bitcoin and other coins. Sometimes, prices go up within a second and you find yourself stuck when trying to trade your assets due to complications within some exchanges.
As an investor, I evaluate exchanges based on their protocol and what they're accomplishing with their platform.
- Are they user-friendly?
- Can I get help whenever needed?
- Are they secure enough?
- Do they have a solid team?
Here are some of the exchanges I trade at:
Bittrex: It’s one of the safest exchanges in my opinion. But because I am on mobile, the user experience is not so solid. it’is a US-based exchange headquartered in Seattle, Washington. It’s been around since 2013 It was funded by 2 ex Microsoft employees.

Gate io: I used to trade on Gate, but recently, they canned Canadians so, that’s out.Not much is available about the team. What I liked about Gate is that it is secure, mobile friendly and intuitive. The thing is Gate was named by SEC, in the list of crypto exchanges under investigation. Along wth Binance. This raises big alarms.

Binance: I don’t think much is to be said about Binance. In addition to the excellent user experience, mobile friendlines, high liquity, technically sound team, one thing Binance has that I have not seen with other exchanges is their community. If you have been on telegram, you know what I mean. I also like that they are planninhg to go decentralized soon. Rumor has it that plans for beta testing of the DEX is coming in 2019.

KubitX: This one is a new exchange that I have come across, it is an up and coming exchange growing out of Africa. They are serious contanders for the fastest exchange. Their exchange will be able to proces over 12,000,000 trades per second, which should make it the fastest exchange out there,

What sets them part is how they are going about acquiring their user base. They are going on the ground WIth their Global channel ambassador (GCA) program, they have a locally based rep in every country in Africa, and each GCA works with channel ambassadors to bring awareness about blockchain technology even to remote locations. They are going after Africa because it is under served when it comes to cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. Their CAs and GCAs are holding meetings and discussing cryptocurrencies and blockchain in their native tongues. They seem to be really pushing the barrier of what it means to do drive adopton and financial integration. I think it has the opportunity to be a top exchange if they can pull it off.

Sorta like what Binance was to China during the crypto crackdown of 2017.
If you remember, Binance was basically the only exchange that didn't get shut down at the time and this helped them become the giant that they are today.

I see many parallels between Binance and Kubitx in that sense. Africa is looking like it’s going to be the next giant to enter the blockchain space. Kubitx's strategy of working with locally situated representatives to promote blockchain education and user adoption could be key to help them hold a monopoly in the African market.

They did a private sale recently and today they have announced that their beta is ready for testing. They are looking for testers. You can read more about that in the link below, if you want to check them about.

Bitcoin and China

Hey all, Like many here I'm somewhat new to cryptocurrency but have decided to purchase some Verge, and other currencies. China recently rocked the cryptocurrency exchanges, and now based on the below article it may deliver another mortal blow to Bitcoin and it's altcoin brethren. I have a few questions for the cryptocurrency veterans.
  1. Everyone seems all excited about Verge possibly getting placed on binance, but this article leads me to believe binance may be shutdown.
  2. I have BNB in binance, should I sell?
  3. Skeptics have recently claimed that cryptocurrency is in a bubble. I believe this technology is in its infancy but I can't help to think that China's regulation moves are only the beginning of a larger international governmental crackdown on these currencies. Verge from what I gather is extremely secure and anonymous, rogue states like north korea, would love to be able to use this to launder money into and out of their country. I think as this grows in popularity were going to be rocked by weekly crackdowns by government banks who are basically afraid of change. Basically, I think we're in for a beating... thoughts?

Where should I set up my new blockchain company!?

Where should I set up my new blockchain company!?
It’s true that not many countries are overly friendly to cryptocurrency companies right now. There are only a handful of nations which are openly attracting this fantastic new technology/sector.
Realistically speaking, there are 5 countries which ‘lead the way’ when choosing where to open up.
Malta
In early 2018, Malta’s government launched the Malta Digital Innovation Authority in order to provide legal clarity for organisations developing Blockchain technologies, cryptocurrencies, and Initial Coin Offerings (ICO). Malta is quickly becoming an extremely popular location for cryptocurrency businesses, and many companies are currently considering moving to this new blockchain haven. The small island is one of the global leaders in online gambling and is now attracting crypto startups by proposing guidelines on blockchain and cryptocurrency applications in the gaming industry.
During a recent political meeting in Malta, Prime Minister Muscat made it clear how he envisages the future of blockchain and cryptocurrency. Contrary to what people may expect, he is quite open-minded toward both industries. In fact, he is confident the country needs to take the first step to properly regulate these industries in the coming months.
Most people already know about Binance’s relations and aspirations regarding Malta and its evident Binance is not the first company to “migrate” either. There has been an interest from other companies as well, according to Muscat. However, none of them are on the same level as the popular exchange right now. These companies want to come to Malta because the island is ready to offer regulation. The country has a clear plan of action and this is a positive development for the industry as a whole.
Muscat is confident he can bring this industry on par with the financial and gaming industries in the country. Assuming that promise holds up, positive things are in store for companies such as Binance (and Monaco Coin). The jobs created by all of these companies will help boost the local economy as well.
Japan
Japan, claimed by many to be the motherland of Satoshi Nakamoto, the founder and creator of Bitcoin, has embraced its long-lost grandchild from the very beginning. One of the most technologically advanced countries, it is the first and only country that has a proper legal system regulating cryptocurrency trading.
Despite the Mt. Gox controversy, Japan is the largest Bitcoin market. According to a Nikkei report cited in a note by Masao Muraki, a global financial strategist at Deutsche Bank, around 40% of bitcoin trading in Q4 2017 was conducted in yen.
Switzerland
The world’s center for the wealth management industry, the Alpine country is striving to “become the crypto-nation” according to Johann Schneider-Ammann, Switzerland’s economics minister. This remark was made in the context of the “Crypto Valley” project, an independent, government-supported association inspired by the enormous advantages of global industry clusters. Crypto Valley, centered in and around the Swiss area of Zug, is now one of the world’s leading ecosystems for crypto, blockchain, and distributed ledger technologies. In addition, Switzerland is said to be one of the world leaders in the number of successful ICOs.
Estonia
This Baltic country has long been a a tech hotbed. Think of all of the successful tech enterprises of the recent past including Skype, for example. So, it’s no wonder Estonia is one of very few countries where digital currency adoption is thriving; the blockchain technology is used in the spheres such as national health, judicial, legislative, security, and commercial code systems. Besides, Estonia is the first country to offer e-Residency, a government issued digital identity that empowers entrepreneurs around the world to set up and run a location-independent business.
Singapore
After the recent Indian central bank’s crackdown on virtual money, a lot of Indian firms started looking at registering their companies in Singapore, as it is rightfully considered a global hub of blockchain revolution and one of the most crypto-friendly countries, largely due to its stable politics, reliable infrastructure, and favorable business environment. At the moment, Singapore is one of the last major banking centers that allow for unregulated cryptocurrency exchanges.
There we go. 5 locations to choose from. I’m a big fan of the Mediterranean sunshine and the beach. Malta, for now, is my location of choice.
Good luck!
